We offer flexible, convenient, and collaborative solutions for projects of different scopes - whether you're diving into a one-room furnishing overhaul, just want some help defining the design direction, or are undertaking a full-scale renovation. It's the same approach as the one taken for our traditional, in-person clients. Just sans the site visits.

For projects involving construction, we provide hands-on, virtual construction administration or the documentation you'll need to manage the project yourself.

For furnishings, we manage all procurement and provide remote guidance for installation.

  • Working closely with all participants and stakeholders, we design, manage, and facilitate all aspects of your construction project from design development through installation.

  • We provide all documentation needed for the construction team to execute their work true to our designs. This includes floor plans, elevations, light plans, FF&E schedules, 3-D renderings, and spec folders.

  • We manage all aspects of a project to ensure that every element is executed flawlessly and to spec, per budget requirements, and on schedule. We'll keep you consistently informed on project progress but you're free to be exactly as involved as you'd like to be while we handle the rest.

  • We provide detailed, life-like renderings to assist you in envisioning a finished space all the way down to the trim on the roman shades.

  • We don't dive into a project's design development until we've thoroughly refined the project scope, taking careful stock of construction parameters and ensuring that the desired investment is in alignment with the scope of work.

  • Through visual style boards, space planning, and 3-D renderings, we develop a cohesive concept for all furnishings and decor. Each space is tailored to meet both your aesthetic and functional aspirations while also serving the overall design vision and architecture.

  • We curate artwork and smalls so that every space we touch feels captivating, layered, and timeless.

  • Most of our projects incorporate custom-built furniture, metalwork, millwork, etc. We work closely with trades and artisans to execute our bespoke designs.

  • When you're on the hunt for a piece of property, we provide a professional eye to help you ensure that your investment is aligned with your financial and aesthetic goals.

  • We handle the procurement of every single piece we source from sampling to purchasing to delivery and installation.

We like to say that the only thing formulaic about our work lies in the methods we use. Through our streamlined and efficient processes, we (seemingly) effortlessly guide projects from concept to completion, inviting you to only be as involved as you want to be.

Our process is always kicked off with a collaborative discovery phase where we get to know our clients, explore creative directions together, and take detailed stock of all budgetary and functional requirements.

With a client-first, never-the-same-thing-twice approach to interior design, we've found that digging deep at the outset is a surefire way to establish easy and efficient decision-making throughout the course of our work together. Sparking a fun and creative experience for all is the cherry on top.

 
Process

01 / let’s chat

When you’ve decided it’s time to invest in your interior, a complimentary discovery call is the first step after you fill out our project inquiry questionnaire. We’ll gather more details about you, your home, your design dreams and desires, and briefly walk you through our process. If it seems like a good fit, we’ll either have a meeting on-site or gather more details virtually in order to create a comprehensive design proposal based on your project's specific needs. Shortly after our initial consultation, you’ll receive a detailed estimate and summary which clearly outlines the design goals and establishes the scope of work.

02 / programming

Once you’ve signed on with Black Lacquer Design, we’ll start laying all of the necessary groundwork for the project right away: conducting a site survey to study the property, creating as-built plans, and gathering information from you to take stock of all of your aesthetic preferences and functional requirements. We’re a client-centric firm so we always start by carefully considering and determining your project’s unique components before we dive into any conceptualization.

03 / schematics

We’ll take everything we learned from our programming to start initial space planning and aesthetic conceptualization. We'll conduct a walk-through with your general contractor and/or any relevant trades and begin our feasibility study. Collaborating with the construction crew, we'll assess the feasibility of the scope, budget, and timeline in order to ensure we're maximizing your investment and making best use of all parameters. In tandem, we'll explore inspiration with you to establish the overall design direction.

04 / discovery

Now we'll start refining floor plans and drawing up millwork elevations, lighting plans, and furniture layouts. We'll provide detailed FF&E (furnishings, fixtures, and equipment) allowances, which are itemized to show you where and how we recommend spending your available funds. It's also when the "pretty" starts. Concept boards will elaborate on the overall design direction via reference images, written briefs, initial interior finish recommendations, and specific details and ideas. This all acts as our road map for design evolution. By the end of this phase, we'll have fine-tuned the concept before specifying and presenting any specific, real-life materials and fixtures.

05 / design development

After establishing a general plan of action, it’s time to narrow down the overall vision into a cohesive, comprehensive design. We’ll continue space planning and developing an ideal layout for everything from interior walls (for full remodels) to accent furniture. Next, we’ll pull together photographs of individual pieces and materials on PDFs (that we refer to as style boards) that reflect the design plan. For most construction spaces, we’ll also be providing 3-D renderings to help you visualize how everything works together (we of course also offer 3-D renderings a la carte). We’ll present these to you along with full furniture plans and detailed tear sheets for each item.

06 / implementation

Throughout your project, we’ll handle all aspects of project management with a keen eye for detail that's indispensable to cohesive and thoughtful designs. We’ll procure all FF&E goods; collaborate with the construction team and tradespeople, providing all details and specifications needed to execute the design; and oversee all installations to ensure that our high standards are met.

The finished result will be imbued with handcrafted details executed to perfection.

After the dust is cleared and packages are delivered comes the best part - installation day! We’ll bring in our team to style and set everything up just the way we imagined it, including all accessories and art.
