Black Lacquer Design was established with the notion that almost every room can benefit from a bit of black and a little lacquer.

Since its inception in 2014, the firm has received a number of accolades for outstanding residential and commercial work, most recently being named one of the nation's fifteen "Fresh Faces of Design" by Luxe Magazine. Black Lacquer Design is serious about execution and aesthetic but ultimately, we believe that it's all about building a fun and beautiful life. The spaces we inhabit most should both satisfy and inspire.

Caitlin Murray, Founder & CEO

Always an enthusiast for living well, Caitlin's eclectic personal style is a manifestation of modern sensibilities and her love for fabulous design from decades past. She believes in creating spaces that are chic, smart, soulful, personal and delightful. Though every project inspires a completely unique concept, each of her interiors feels simultaneously cozy, glamorous and fresh.

Precociously organized and object obsessed, Caitlin grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana with the opportunity to explore the arts at an early age thanks to a progressive academic curriculum and parents who championed creative pursuits. She earned a B.A. in journalism and art history from Indiana University in 2008 followed by a degree in interior design from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 2010.

After building a comprehensive career in the industry with acclaimed firms including House of Honey and MASHstudios, she launched and co-founded her first company, Caitlin & Caitlin, in 2012 before branching out independently with the debut of Black Lacquer Design two years later.

Caitlin currently lives in Los Angeles' Beachwood Canyon neighborhood in a 1930s French Normandy style abode with her fiancé, a large collection of whimsical vintage artwork and a cocker spaniel named Color.

Meet the team

Laura Circle.jpg

Laura Fairly, Production Director

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Laura is casual and easygoing while still meticulous in attending to the details and fine-tuning organizational systems. She received her B.A. in English from U.C. Berkeley in 2010 and has nine years of experience driving projects and communications. The daughter of a furniture designer, interior design was a natural extension of her inherited interest in furniture fabrication and restoration. If she isn't in the office, you can most likely find her hiking with her dog, thrifting, or cozying up with a book. Rest assured, though, she definitely won't be cooking you anything.

Alexis Martin, Studio Coordinator

Alexis might be our newest team member but you wouldn't know it from how essential she's already become. She has eight years of experience in visual merchandising for small boutiques and major corporations alike, and we're pretty sure she's also taken a master class in the art of multi-tasking. When she's not coordinating the brass tacks for our team, she's either curating her killer collection of vintage clothing or she's behind the camera, creatively directing shoots and snapping gorgeous shots.

Whether your space is craving a cosmetic change or is in need of a complete overhaul, we have exciting answers.
